SRI-Adviser: Governance & Accountability Institute Chosen as Global Reporting Initiative Data Partner

The Institute is the GRI's only US-based Data Partner, and will monitor and collect the sustainability reports of US-based corporations.
Governance & Accountability Institute, a New York-based research and advisory organization, announced Thursday that it had been chosen by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) as the only US-based Data Partner.
According to G&A Institute, "GRI Data Partners located around the world assist the GRI organization in monitoring, collecting, analyzing, and documenting sustainability reports from their respective territories." The Institute will be responsible for monitoring and collecting the corporate sustainability reports of companies headquartered in the US, as well as foreign companies with operations here.
Henry Boerner, Chairman of G&A Institute, stated, "In the United States, companies are slowly catching up to the rest of the world in capturing, measuring, managing and disclosing sustainability data. These efforts respond to the rising expectations of investors and stakeholders for greater ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) transparency."
Information captured by GRI Data Partners is used by GRI in its weekly updates of the GRI Reports List, which tracks such trends in GRI reporting and results as integrated reporting, which version of the GRI Guidelines was used, and whether reports were submitted for third-party verification.
In 2010, more than 1,850 organizations submitted reports that are included on the GRI Reports List, and many companies reference GRI Guidelines in their sustainability reports. While 132 US-based companies used the GRI framework in their reporting in 2009, the number represents only 12% of all companies using the framework, a far smaller percentage than is found in Europe.
In January 2011, GRI launched the GRI Focal Point United States, which, Focal Point Director Mike Wallace told SocialFunds.com, "Is in place to support US companies with the ambition to the lead the way to a sustainable economy."
In June, GRI announced that it is planning an update of its sustainability reporting framework for the first time since it launched its G3 Guidelines in 2006.
In 2010, GRI joined the International Integrated Reporting Committee (IIRC). According to IIRC, "Integrated Reporting demonstrates the linkages between an organization's strategy, governance and financial performance and the social, environmental and economic context within which it operates."
G&A Institute invited US-based companies and other organizations to send their sustainability reports to reports@ga-institute.com.
