Socially responsible investment: Niche segment moving to mainstream

Socially responsible investment has long laboured on the sidelines, often regarded as a niche suitable only for investors who put principles before profit. But that perception is changing fast as the SRI sector and the mainstream start to converge.
Climate change and the investment issues around that is one of the main drivers of the nascent move to integrate SRI factors into investment research, says Bill Page, chairman of the ESG (environmental, social and governance) team at State Street Global Advisors. Climate change represents both an investment risk and a huge opportunity, with the latter underlined by the rapid rate of growth in the clean technology sector - estimated to be 30-50 per cent a year.
