PRI (Principles for Responsible Investments) is setting up an academic network
PRI Academic Network
The Board agreed that we should pursue the idea of developing a global platform to deliver high-quality and accessible academic research to PRI signatory organisations. There is huge potential for linking academics with practitioners, and distilling cutting-edge research to PRI signatories. This is especially the case across cultures and languages.
There are a number of academic institutions working on PRI-related issues that could help to undertake this activity, and indeed plans along these lines are underway, in particular with the European Centre for Corporate Engagement (ECCE). The ECCE – funded by one of the PRI’s founding signatories ABP and led by professors Kees Koedijk (Rotterdam School of Management) and Rob Bauer (Maastricht University), also from ABP – is perfectly positioned to work with the PRI to build this network.
Other research organisations that are interested in this area include:
The Institute for Ethics Governance and Law (IEGL), Griffith University, Australia (a key centre for the UN University in Tokyo)
The Elfenworks Center for the Study of Fiduciary Capitalism, California
Institute for Responsible Investment, Boston College
The PRI could offer researchers a platform for disseminating their research, as well as provide opportunities for practitioner input. The association with leading investors and the United Nations may also assist researchers in obtaining grant funding and expand the amount of research being done.
Ideas for moving forward
In partnership with the other members of this network, the following activities could be undertaken:
Annual responsible investment research conference for academics and interested practitioners, including prizes for the best research; PhD Colloquium
Development of a responsible investment researchers’ network, including an email list and Intranet for researchers and postgraduate students
Quarterly or twice-yearly publication that reviews cutting-edge research, in an accessible and easily digestible format
Translation of leading research into selected languages
Facilitation of two-way communication between researchers and practitioners
Contributions to various PRI publications
Special edition of a journal on mainstreaming responsible investment
Project on communicating Universal Owner research to practitioners
Developing curriculum and promoting responsible investment courses in MBA and other business qualifications
