Financial Standard: Industry gathers for ESG academy
Source: www.financialstandard.com.au
Wealth management institutions, industry bodies and even a rock star turned politician were among the crowd that gathered yesterday at a stakeholder meeting to develop the Responsible Investment Academy curriculum and framework.
Former Midnight Oil frontman, now minister for environment, heritage and the arts, Peter Garratt along with Academy chair, Steve Gibbs and Responsible Investment Association of Australiasia chief executive, Louise O''Halloran, officially launched the academy yesterday.
The academy''s curriculum and format is yet to be developed, but O''Halloran said the academy is expected to open in the second quarter next year.
She said the academy would include a combination of web based and live events inline with a CPD program to be launched next year. Participants completing the web based course will be examined and granted certification once completed.
In addition, O''Halloran said the academy will create a library which will comprise of a number of internationally recognised research reports on integrating environmental, social and governance into financial reports and other sustainability issues.
Gibbs said the academy''s curriculum would not only target fund managers and analysts, but also business development managers.
"We will developing a number of different curriculum for different people, primarily based on investment analysts and fund managers so they have the skills to take environmental, social and governance into their financial analysis," said Gibbs.
"We''ll also be developing programs for business development managers so they can meaningful conversations with their clients and trustees."
Gibbs said the academy is exploring different partnerships with universities and other educational providers to ensure the academy''s qualifications are internationally recognised.
Launching the Responsible Investment Academy is a sign that integrating ESG factors into financial analysis is gaining momentum in the mainstream.
"Had we tried to launch the academy one or two years ago I think we would have faced an uphill battle but the world is changing around us and the stock markets are becoming increasingly exposed a range of ESG impacts," said O''Halloran.
"We need a world class learning centre which can be accessible and flexible and take the lead on the world''s best practice, a place organisations can send their employees to skill up in ESG integration and collaborate with others."
The academy received a $50,000 grant from the department of environment, heritage and the arts.
