Environmental Finance: ESG investor initiatives to merge
Source: www.environmental-finance.com
London, 9 October: The UN Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) is to amalgamate with the Enhanced Analytics Initiative, opening up the latter’s research on ‘extra-financial issues’ to a wider audience.
A spokesman for the PRI said that many details have yet to be decided – including potential name changes. However, he said it is likely that the PRI name will be kept.
A working group has been set up, which includes EAI and PRI representatives, to work out the “nitty gritty” of the merger. It will report back in December.
The PRI is a set of voluntary principles on incorporating environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues into mainstream investment decision-making. More than 400 organisations, managing assets in excess of $15 trillion, have signed up to the principles, which were developed by a group of institutional investors, the UN Environment Programme’s Finance Initiative and the UN Global Compact.
The EAI is a collaboration of asset owners and managers representing $3 trillion of investment, which aims to encourage analysis of extra-financial issues (EFIs) – such as ESG factors – to be integrated into mainstream research.
Several investors are signatories to both the PRI and the EAI, including Generation Investment Management and the BT Pension Fund, the spokesman said.
Peter Scales, chairman of the EAI, said: “The opportunity to join forces with the PRI will allow us to internationalise and extend the call for EFI research, with the benefit of PRI’s global reach and broad signatory base.”
Donald MacDonald, chairman of the PRI, said the amalgamation “will offer PRI the opportunity to make use of EAI’s experience in order to translate its principles into execution”.
A formal collaboration between the two organisations began in January 2007, when signatories of the PRI were encouraged to join the EAI and vice-versa.
